Rhythm and Blues in the key of B

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

I got the whole family involved in this crime. My 12 year old Daughter is reading a poem she wrote in the 3rd grade. My 10 year old Son is tickling the ivories, and reading Psalm 23. My 29 year old Wife (Your welcome Baby-Cakes) is reciting her favorite poem from her youth. Me I’m blowing bass reading from Ezekiel and spouting off some Albert Einstein quotes, the last one being…

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

What amp should I use to gig with?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

What’s a good amp to gig with?
I’m in a Rhythm + Blues band, and eventually we’re going to be playing gigs. Now, I currently use a 15 watt Line 6 Spider III amplifier (You know, the ones with all of the effects and such), and I want to know, is this small practice amp going to be loud enough for a gig? Also, I have a spending limit of $125. I’d love to buy a Crate half stack, but that’d cost me $300. Any advice, I’d love to get something nice…and LOUD!

The half stack I’m looking at:
Cabinet:

Head:

I had a frontman for my first amp. That was possibly the worst one I’ve ever used, the tone was bad, Distortion was weak, and it was quiet.

Can we really call it Rock and Roll when the music has changed so much in 50 years?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Listen to the early Rock and Roll sometime, which was an offshoot of Rhythm and Blues and Country Music and first appeared in the 1950s. Early Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets, etc.

Compare with today’s Rock and Roll. Better? Not as good? Part of the evolution of the genre?

I was a teenaged disk jockey in 1958 and played a lot of the early stuff. I like most of the contemporary rock but is it truly Rock and Roll? This is a serious question!!
I know I’m old. That isn’t part of the question. Nor does it affect my tastes or interests in the music.

I do hope Ghost lives long enough to have someone tell him he’s old.
Great answer, Moogle King.

Have you ever bought an album of music from TV?

*In Dave Chapelle’s white voice* “Yes, sister, I too desire that great feel of classic rhythm and blues love songs. Nothing gets me more in the mood than listening to these things at 3 o’clock in the morning while watching late night infomercials with you.”

A Song You Just Love to Hear?

Monday, November 17th, 2008

But are afraid to let anyone else know you love it? I listen to a lot of music. I drive a truck for Fedex Express and I play anything from Jazz, Heavy Metal and old school Funk and Rhythm & Blues. I even listen to some Country music (I’m slowly warming up to it!) and I just love “The Candy Man” by Sammy Davis Jr!

I loved it as a kid and will put it on my cd’s that I burn just to brighten up my day. My friends think I’m nuts but that’s ok cause I know they are!

What’s that one song for you? The one you love but don’t want anyone else to know?
