Years ago it used to be Rhythm & Blues, then seemed to change to “black gangster rapper” type music.
Then I watched a wimpy looking white guy who didn’t sound too good to me (currently number 1 on the R&B chart!!) on American Idol last night and I’m really confused, can any of the younger guys explain? Thanks.
From a stuggling to keep up 50 year old man.
PS, I prefer the gangster stuff.

r&b is not a color its a sound. rap is not r&b, rap is rap. a wimpy white guy can sing r&b if he so desires…
R & B still means rhythm and blues. The guy your refering to is Robin Thicke and that song he was singing would be considered R & B, because it does sound more soulful. Rap music is not R & B it is just rap or hip-hop. It’s not about the color of the person singing the song, it’s the way that it sounds.
as a youngster myself, i grew up listening to older R&B. it has changed significantly. but then you have to think to youself.. so has rock, and other genres. i think all music is just flowing with its time. but R&B definately is not “black gangster rap” as you called it. it just has more of a hip hop feel. and when i say “hip hop” i dont mean gangster rap
r & b is still rhythm & blues hip hop is what your refering to this “so called” gangster rap.
