Why is it that a lot of hip-hop/R&B songs talk about sex?

trust me. I’m a mature teenager and i love songs that are played these days. But at the same time i get so sick and disgusted of how most of the songs on the radio talk about sex and how they all immorally disrespects women. I remember someone say, “people wonder why r&b songs describe sex and stuff but if it wasn’t for that, RnB can’t exist.” but Wikipedia says this: [Writer/producer Robert Palmer defines "rhythm & blues as a catchall term referring to any music that was made by and for black Americans.] You can go to Wikipedia and read on more about it and it doesn’t really mention the word “sex.”
Of course there are some songs that are really deep and meaningful but i’m really talking about the songs that are considered “smash” and “hit.” can someone please explain this to meeee i’m just so fed up with trashy songs.

because they haven’t experinced anyhting better…????

Because too many hip hop artists think that by rapping about sex and violence they will look cool. And they have no imagination to rap about anything meaningful or original. Yeah it sucks!

i guess that that genre of music is just too obsessed with status. there is a lot more deep music in the alternative and rock realms

Heh. Do you like Josh Groban?!?! *faints*

    sex sells. think about it.

  8. Grasshopper says:

It’s just a repeat of the 80’s. Back then all the girls were into rock, so all the rock songs were about sex. Now all the girls are into hip hop so…You get the point.

Sex apparently sells. I’m guessing this is it. It’s a way to catch people’s attention. It’s not just hip/hop though. Pop songs just might not be as blatant, rock songs talk about sex too. We’re just living in a society that no longer feels the need to sugar coat these things. I personally don’t like popular music, so I rarely listen to it. I suggest that if you feel the same perhaps you should check out some older songs of those genres and see what they’re really about, or find some indie singers/bands.

All songs aimed at teenagers are about sex, but most do it less crudely than hip-hop.

  11. blip says:

It because the “people” who write those songs dont think about anything else but having sex and selling drugs.

Sex does sell, but mainly in my opinion: they’re adults in thier prime, getting laid is mission #1. Also, all the good stuff to sing about is already done and old. War, taken. Love, decades worth of music. Sadness, a lot of that to, hatred was done by like Korn and nirvana, not much left to sing about… school? taken, its all taken, sports, thats taken, its all taken, but people havnt had much guts to talk about sex in the 80’s and before rap. If they did, they did it under so much secrecy you wouldnt know unless they told you themselves, theres your answer.

My bad, guess they did talk about sex quite a bit :P

The best method of peace of mind is turning off the radio. Your brain is a transmitter, your soul is the receiver.

  14. Dolla says:

cuz it’s gonna be super fucking boring ig you just gonna listen to all the song about emotion, nature, the world, people, love, it can sometimes be depressing, that aint mean i dont respect women’s right, the world is not perfect, people do stuff that’s totally lame but some pplz still like it, would you like it if you wake up facing the same old thing everyday

  15. dieseldadd says:

Although, as some of your answerers have said, “Sex Sells”, which is true, I think the main reason they talk about sex so much is that that’s where their only head really is. They can’t get their brain out from between their legs because that’s the only place it is, and so they have no capability to look for or use a brain anywhere else. God Bless you.

if the song is about smash or hit as you said, those are trash, and don’t listen them, those will make your mind corrupt and dirty. I still don’t understand why those black guys are only singing about the sex, but I guess their hiphop ancestor began to sing about the sex object, so it is deeply rooted in their culture. It’s the same thing as the guns can not be banned in the U.S. continent though we know it’s no beneficial

Although I do agree to a point, there’s nothing new about this complaint. I’m in my mid-40s and this has been said about all genres of new music as long as i remember and i’m sure it goes back to the beginning of time. just for your own research ask the older folks around you about this.frank sinatra was considered scandalous as was elvis and many others. even further back is the bible with “song of Solomon” (no disrespect ever intended to it) you should use your good judgment not to listen to music that offends you and be patient. Music and sex have a long history together. good luck and hope this helps,Mark

Unfortunately, sex sells. It’s the ignorance of the artists, the record companies, radio stations and the people who buy this stuff who keeps this trash going.

R&B used to be something that you can play on the radio with your grandparents, and children can listen to it without you feeling embarrassed or ashamed of the lyrics. Songs were poetically written in such a way that the subject matter was clean enough for everyone to enjoy but children didn’t understand the “adult” parts. In other words, “reading between the lines.”

I love R&B, but now I turn to the Country Music channel on TV because that’s the only clean, wholesome music channel that family friendly. If I want to view R&B music, it has to be classic old school R&B music videos that I can buy on DVD.
