Do all poems have to have rhythm?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

I have to do a report on this poem but I really dont think it has rhythm. Also, what exactly is the structure of a poem?
Reckless Poem
Mary Oliver
Today again I am hardly myself.
It happens over and over.
It is heaven-sent.

It flows through me
like the blue wave.
Green leaves – you may believe this or not –
have once or twice
emerged from the tips of my fingers

somewhere
deep in the woods,
in the reckless seizure of spring.

Though, of course, I also know that other song,
the sweet passion of one-ness.

Just yesterday I watched an ant crossing a path, through the
tumbled pine needles she toiled.
And I thought: she will never live another life but this one.
And I thought: if she lives her life with all her strength
is she not wonderful and wise?
And I continued this up the miraculous pyramid of everything
until I came to myself.

And still, even in these northern woods, on these hills of sand,
I have flown from the other window of myself
to become white heron, blue whale,
red fox, hedgehog.
Oh, sometimes already my body has felt like the body of a flower!
Sometimes already my heart is a red parrot, perched
among strange, dark trees, flapping and screaming.

Jerry Wexler, last of the visionaries?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

With the recent death of Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler-who coined the term Rhythm & Blues-Berry Gordy/Motown and Jim Stewart/Stax are the only remaining record company giants I know of. Do you think theree is/will there be anyone to fill their shoes?
Kman-

With the exception of Dust My Broom (Trumpet Records), most of Elmore’s well known tunes were recorded for Fire/Enjoy. I have a box set titled Something Inside Of Me:The Complete Fire-Enjoy Sessions. It includes THe Sky is Crying, It Hurts Me Too, shake Your Moneymaker, Baby Please Set A Date, and lots of others.
Melting-

Your answer reminded me that there have been some men (and women too I’m sure) in more recent times who have started small labels with a focus on quality and unique voices. Hightone and Bloodshot are a couple in addition to those you mentioned. I have the original release of the Spirituals to Swing concerts -stunning! (actually they were produced by John Hammond, one of my heroes of american music)

By the way-not sure if you saw my note to you on another question. Hope all is well with you and you loved ones in hurricane alley. I believe you’re in southern Miss.?
Ross Barnett?????

Good God, do they actually have a public facility named after him?
Thank you all for your answers. I also posted this in Rock & Pop-1 answer, and R & B!!!!-No Answer!!!!!
Wish I could give you all best answer, especially my firend Kman who knows his stuff so well. I chose Melting Media because his response made me realize that there are still some with vision in the record industry. Most are at small labels, which Atlantic was in the begininng. Thumbs up for everyone.

Did you know that Rock music has a giant African heritage ?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Well I like rock and metal , I used to laugh at Rap and other Black music . Many believe that Rock is “white” while Rap , Rhythm n blues , soul are “black” .
But I learned that “rock” inherits a LOT from BLUES , especially the works of famous pioneer musicians like Robert Johnson , Wow that guy has some major guitar pieces .
And Blues is nothing but the translation of African folk music into Western music style .
So did you know that ?
Robert Johnson was an African American , he died after he was poisoned by a white bar owner whose wife it is said he had been involved with .
Yet on the surface , one could say the Metal rock scene is dominated by the British (Judas Priest , Iron Maiden , Motorhead , Def Leppard , Deep Purple , and of course Led Zeppelin )
And some other bands with British themes like Manowar and Saxon .

To answerer who mentioned Celtic and Irish folk influences , maybe those influences were added by British artists adopting this kind of music ?
And the domination of Death Metal by Scandinavian bands .
What’s the link between Metal in general and Nordic identity ?
Which identity had more effect on Heavy Metal ?

Anyone else thought country music was noise and later changed their minds?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Lately I’ve been listening to country while driving and I’m impressed with the rhythm. The lyrics tell the most poignant stories. I also like the accent or twang, the more pronounced the better and the guitar.

BTW: I’m an anything black kinda girl - a huge fan of rhythm and blues, rap etc. What’s happening here?

Rhythm And Blues Revue 8/10 (1955)

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

This 1955 R&B Revue consists of performances by some of the greats of the golden era of Rhythm and Blues including Cab Calloway, Martha Davis, Ruth Brown, Lionel Hampton, Faye Adams, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Herb Jeffries, and Joe Turner. The Hampton numbers reveal how close he came to abandoning jazz entirely in favor of music in the proto rock vein. Calloway is doing another version of his hit “Minnie the Moocher”, this one actually superior to his later rendering in the Blues Brothers. Joe Turner adds a performance which once again demonstrates that he is one of the all time great blues shouters. The Delta Rhythm Boys sing “Dry Bones”, an early showing of the gospel roots to R&B. Amos Milburn’s “Bad Bad Whiskey” is a tad painful to watch, given Milburn’s subsequent descent into alcoholism. All in all, the film offers a rare insight into the dawn of the burgeoning rock era.
