Did you know that Rock music has a giant African heritage ?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Well I like rock and metal , I used to laugh at Rap and other Black music . Many believe that Rock is “white” while Rap , Rhythm n blues , soul are “black” .
But I learned that “rock” inherits a LOT from BLUES , especially the works of famous pioneer musicians like Robert Johnson , Wow that guy has some major guitar pieces .
And Blues is nothing but the translation of African folk music into Western music style .
So did you know that ?
Robert Johnson was an African American , he died after he was poisoned by a white bar owner whose wife it is said he had been involved with .
Yet on the surface , one could say the Metal rock scene is dominated by the British (Judas Priest , Iron Maiden , Motorhead , Def Leppard , Deep Purple , and of course Led Zeppelin )
And some other bands with British themes like Manowar and Saxon .

To answerer who mentioned Celtic and Irish folk influences , maybe those influences were added by British artists adopting this kind of music ?
And the domination of Death Metal by Scandinavian bands .
What’s the link between Metal in general and Nordic identity ?
Which identity had more effect on Heavy Metal ?

Can we really call it Rock and Roll when the music has changed so much in 50 years?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Listen to the early Rock and Roll sometime, which was an offshoot of Rhythm and Blues and Country Music and first appeared in the 1950s. Early Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets, etc.

Compare with today’s Rock and Roll. Better? Not as good? Part of the evolution of the genre?

I was a teenaged disk jockey in 1958 and played a lot of the early stuff. I like most of the contemporary rock but is it truly Rock and Roll? This is a serious question!!
I know I’m old. That isn’t part of the question. Nor does it affect my tastes or interests in the music.

I do hope Ghost lives long enough to have someone tell him he’s old.
Great answer, Moogle King.

Jerry Wexler, last of the visionaries?

Friday, October 31st, 2008

With the recent death of Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler-who coined the term Rhythm & Blues-Berry Gordy/Motown and Jim Stewart/Stax are the only remaining record company giants I know of. Do you think theree is/will there be anyone to fill their shoes?
Fonzie- thanks for your answer. I must admit that getting one response is pretty disappointing. I browse R & P regularly and see many complaints about all the silly questions, yet no-one else answers this?

should modern rock bands have more of a blues inspiration?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

maybe i’m bias because i prefer classic rock (mainly 60’s & 70’s. but a bit of 50’s & 80’s) over many modern rock (90’s & on), but i feel like there’s more of a soul, more of a good guitar riff when the musician has some love for the blues & their rhythms. & i think it would be great if more bands would do the same.
what do you think?

R&P, how much (or how little) do you know about Rhythm and Blues/ Soul?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

If not, i suggest getting into more artists during 50s till the 70s to get a glimpse of the inspiration that artists from the later decades got.

Here is a perfect song from the 60s interracial group Rotary Connection (with Minnie Riperton) Regarding coming together regarding racial boundaries with music. Take a listen.

Why is it called R&B when it has nothing to do with rhythm OR blues?

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

Much of R & B is just whining nonsense. Or exercises in advanced vocal tremolo.
The slower, the worse.
If you like it, fine. Just change the name. The crap they call r&b has no connection with the music of black Americans who died back in the 1930’s. No rhythm, no blues.

For example:
When I hear something like, “I Believe I Can Fly”, I don’t feel like dancing (rhythm) and I am not reminded of chain-gang railroad workers (blues).
I am fully aware that “not all blues was recorded in the 30’s”, I was simply using that as a reference point for comparison. Same as the chain gang/railroad thing, not as a subject matter, but as an area where blues were sung regularly.
Of course Ray charles is genuine. I wasn’t talking about all R&B. Just most of it.
