Looking for clever ways to alter popular songs to make them fun for babies?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

For example, we like singing “Get cuddles…when you get the blues” to Johnny Cash’s “Get rhythm,” and, well, we refer to spit-up as ’sploo’ (don’t ask) and thus sing “You can sploo…” to Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance”…

What is the chord progression I hear at the end of a lot of blues songs?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Usually in songs with a kind of 12/8 feel. It sounds like the higher instruments are descending, and the lower instruments are ascending (although I’m more interested in the chords themselves than the specific instrumentation). It’s got a slightly dissonant, moving-in-half-steps sound to it. I hate to use onomatopoeia here, but the rhythm for the progression is something like:

dow
dut-dow
dut-dow
dut-dow now (sometimes holds out here)
dut-dow now

Inverting a blues 1 4 5 progression going into the lower octave, in the second line A of the AAB?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Please help a melodically trained musician write the first rhythm bass line! After writing a new blues melody, 12 bar and AAB, I used a very simple I, IV, V, four quarters to each bar. The second version of line A is higher and harmonizes with line A, sounding good with I, IV, V, I… but it seems more interesting to invert the progression going down, from I, three and one half steps down to the IV, down one step to the IV, and back up to octave I.
The next line is IV, V, I, I an octave higher, for line B.
Is this wrong, or just unorthodox?
